Money Savvy Southwark

Keeping Southwark Money Savvy

What is Money Savvy Southwark? This is a new 5 year project funded by the Big Lottery Fund, which aims to ensure that people can access information to help them better manage money issues in these difficult times. It is a partnership of local agencies led by Southwark Citizens Advice Bureaux Service. Helping local residents who are struggling will become even more important as the welfare benefit changes impact on people. The delivery partners: Citizens Advice Southwark Advising London Southwark Law Centre London Mutual Credit Union Local Accountancy project Thamesreach Lookahead Housing and Care In addition to the delivery partners we have a wider group including Southwark Council and Housing Associations, who form an advisory group. Money Savvy Southwark started in on 22nd March 2013. Over the next 5 years we want to reach 10,000 Southwark Council Tenants, helping them with issues such as: Knowing where to get specialist help if they have debt, benefit or housing problems Making sure they are claiming all the income they are entitled to Prioritising their bills, particularly their rent payments The true cost of high cost credit such as pay day loans and borrowing from doorstep lenders The services of London Mutual Credit Union How to save money on fuel bills We will provide tailored workshops for groups of tenants. A session would typically last 1-2 hours and would involve activities such as quizzes to make money management more fun. Some of the partners such as Thamesreach will be providing one to one support for tenants. We have developed a training programme for Community Champions, people active in their local communities. We will train 250 people to provide information and effective signposting over the life of the project. For more information about the project please contact: Follow us on Twitter @MoneySavvySwark
